Renal Clearance Formula
Formula:Renal Clearance = (Urine Flow Rate × Urine Concentration) / Plasma Concentration
Introduction
The renal clearance formula is used to calculate the rate at which a substance is removed from the plasma by the kidneys. The formula uses the urine flow rate, urine concentration of the substance, and plasma concentration of the substance as parameters to determine the renal clearance. A higher renal clearance indicates greater efficiency of substance removal by the kidneys.
Parameters
Urine Flow Rate
(in mL/min) - the volume of urine produced per minuteUrine Concentration
(in mg/mL) - the concentration of the substance in the urinePlasma Concentration
(in mg/mL) - the concentration of the substance in the plasma
Example Input
Urine Flow Rate
= 100 mL/minUrine Concentration
= 40 mg/mLPlasma Concentration
= 10 mg/mL
Data Validation
The urine flow rate, urine concentration, and plasma concentration should all be greater than 0.
Summary
This calculator provides a measure of the kidney's ability to clear a substance from the plasma and excrete it in the urine.
